The moment a build mixes brands — an ASUS board, Antec fans, a third-party AIO — the "one app to control everything" promise falls apart. Each vendor's software only reliably controls its own hardware, and running three lighting apps at once usually means they fight each other for control. OpenRGB solves this by talking to the hardware directly instead of going through each vendor's app.
1. Install OpenRGB
Grab the latest release for Windows. No need to install vendor "ecosystem" software just for lighting — OpenRGB can detect and control most controllers on its own.
2. Close vendor lighting apps before running it
This is the step people skip and then wonder why nothing syncs. If Armoury Crate, iCUE, or similar are running in the background, they can hold onto lighting control for their own devices and block OpenRGB from taking over. Close them (or at minimum disable their lighting control service) before opening OpenRGB.
3. Detect devices
Open OpenRGB and run device detection. Antec fans, in particular, sometimes need a specific detection mode or a plugin enabled — if they don't show up on the first pass, check OpenRGB's plugin list before assuming they're unsupported.
4. Set one profile, apply it everywhere
Pick a single effect (static color, breathing, whatever matches your setup) and apply it across every detected device from OpenRGB rather than setting each one individually. This is the actual payoff — one app, one profile, every brand lit the same way.
5. Save the profile and set it to run at startup
OpenRGB lets you save your configuration as a profile and launch it automatically on boot (via its own startup option or by adding it to Windows startup apps). Without this, lighting resets to default every reboot and you're back to manually reapplying it.
6. If a device still won't sync
Check OpenRGB's compatibility list for that specific controller before troubleshooting further — some devices need a specific USB mode or firmware version to be detected. It's rarely a lost cause, but it is sometimes a "wrong cable/port" issue rather than a software one.
